Mancini's Liverpool threat
Amantino Mancini is using Liverpool’s interest in him to break through Roma’s salary cap and earn £2m per season.“There has been interest from Liverpool for Mancini,” said agent Gilmar Veloz. “I have spoken with Rafa Benitez, but I answered they must deal with Roma.“If the Giallorossi reach an agreement with the English club, we would need to meet to discuss the player’s future, but I have yet to receive an offer from Roma.”The Brazilian’s contract expires on June 30, 2009 and he is eager to bump up his wages to at least £3m per season. The club is unwilling to break through its £1.7m salary cap, but Veloz is using the interest from Liverpool as leverage to at least approach his target.Roma will meet with Mancini’s agent next week to discuss an extension, as he currently earns just under £1m per season.Newspaper ‘Il Romanista’ reports that the key to keeping him in the capital could be a romantic one, as he has settled down with a local girl and she is not convinced that a switch to Liverpool would suit the couple. The Brazilian’s price-tag rose considerably after his performances in the Champions League last term, including a sensational individual goal against Olympique Lyonnais.
